The dead body of an unidentified young woman washed up on the crowded beach in Ocean Beach near Bayberry Walk Tuesday afternoon during a particularly rough surf day.
No cause of death had been determined as of Tuesday night, but police are saying that, based on the clothes she was wearing, she was not swimming at the time of her death.
She was described as 20 to 30 years old, white or Hispanic, with long black hair, tan Levi pants and a white T-shirt with an American flag in the shape of a butterfly.
No identification was found.
Police are asking for anyone with information to call (631) 852-6000.
Suffolk County and Ocean Beach police responded at 1:05 p.m. She was pronounced dead later that afternoon and taken to the county morgue in Hauppauge.
An eyewitness said he heard a commotion coming from the water and when lifeguards responded found the body.
“We saw the lifeguards running toward the ocean thinking they’re gonna save somebody, and they actually extracted a body from the ocean,” said Ignacio Vazquez, an electrician from Medford who was enjoying the beach with his family.
Vazquez said EMT arrived in less than five minutes but as they tried to perform CPR the body was already stiff and unresponsive.
“It was a beautiful place, a beautiful day, an unfortunate situation,” said Vazquez.
